Delivering basic health care services


Good health continues to elude the poor in Mindanao. Consider these facts in the SZOPAD and ARMM areas:

ARMM has the highest rate of infant and child mortality.
Maternal mortality is very high at 320 per 100,000 live births in 1995.
Residents of ARMM die at a younger age.
Pre-schoolers are have either moderate or severe malnutrition.
More than 85% of all households in Sulu do not have sanitary toilets. In Tawi-Tawi, it is more than 90%.
As of 1995, there was only one doctor for every 14,000 individuals in ARMM. In Sulu, one doctor for every 22,820 individuals.
One nurse in ARMM serves more than 9,000 individuals.
In 1997, there were only 3.77 hospital beds per 10,000 people in the region.
75% of the barangays in ARMM do not have public day care centers.
