Impact of Samar Program


Since the Samar Resource Management Program started in year 2001, it has accomplished the following by end of Fiscal Year 2003:

Household Income (from a base of P1,520)
Increased monthly income to P5,000 of more than 100 household beneficiaries.
The rest have monthly incomes ranging from P3,000 to P5,000.

Mangrove and Upland Reforestation
Established 6 Marine Protected Areas covering 47 hectares.
Reforested around 100 hectares (80% of target) of mangrove
areas.
Converted approximately 430 hectares (61% of target) of upland slopes to agroforestry farms.

Community Building
Organized and strengthened 15 community-based organizations (CBOs) composed of 1,445 households.
Mobilized around P450,000 aggregate capital build up from membership.
Old and New Mahayag Cooperatives (Samar Program-assisted coops) won the First and Second Best Cooperative of the WESAMAR Program (European Union-funded program).

Technology Replication
Assisted 400 household beneficiaries replicate technologies on grouper culture in floating cages, mussel production, mud crab fattening, tilapia culture and seaweed growing.
Helped more than 400 farmers diversify crops into cutflower, vegetable, coffee and abaca farming.
Supported close to 200 beneficiaries adopt poultry and livestock production.
