As part of the Wells Fargo Agroforestry Program in the Marikina Watershed, twenty (20) farmer-beneficiaries of Malayang Samahan ng mga Katutubo ng Antipolo City (MASAKA) Inc. and Tayabasang Umuusad na Pangkatutubong Asosasyon Inc. (TUPAI) participated in the honeybee training and soap making conducted by PBSP in partnership with the University of the Philippines Los Baños Bee Program.
The training commenced with an introduction to stingless bees, followed by community hands-on training. It ended with soap-making using propolis. Aside from honey, propolis is also a product of bees. Honeybee training could be an adjunct to other sources of income for the community. With this bee training activity, the community will learn to appreciate the importance of bees in agriculture, human health, and the environment.
Wells Fargo has been one of PBSP's ardent partners, responding to the call for a more engaged private sector in the Marikina Watershed rehabilitation. From plantation and maintenance of native and fruit-bearing trees to providing agricultural equipment and livelihood interventions, Wells Fargo is able to support the livelihood of farmer families living within or nearby the watershed while contributing to the conservation of biodiversity through this program.
The Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) convened around 30 members of the Population, Health and Environment (PHE) Network and key stakeholders from the House of Representatives and the Senate to discuss the current state of the country’s population, health and environment. The event also included a workshop on developing the national policy agenda on population, health, environment, and way forward for the PHE network.
